Popocatepetl Volcano

The name Popocatepetl comes from the Nahuatl words popōca 'it smokes' and tepētl 'mountain', thus Smoking Mountain. The name Don Goyo comes from the mountain's association in the lore of the region with San Gregorio (St. Gregory), "Goyo" being a nickname-like short form of Gregorio.

Popocatepetl is only 70 km (43 miles) southeast of Mexico City, where it can be seen regularly, depending on the environment.The volcano is one of the three peaks in Mexico that contain glaciers, Iztaccihuatl, and Pico de Orizaba, are the other peaks have glaciers.

Today the volcano is active.

The modern legend says that the volcano is tired of the exploitation towards nature, blaming the man, and if humans continue to exploiting nature, will erupt, destroying the nearby human settlements.

The photograph was taken, when I was on one side of the volcano, well, just several kilometers of the volcano, on a trip to from the city of Durango to Cancun.

It is truly amazing to see the volcano, probably, I think 30 km, and was smoking as you can see in the picture.

The volcano, during the period prehispanic Mexica was a deity, a cult devoted exclusively to the entity. Today the cult survives as a minority or symbolic guardians of the volcano are called Temperos of Popocatepetl, who refer to him as Don Goyo or Seraphim, personified by an Indian.

The Temperos rites at shrines dedicated to Popocatepetl, who are located in the valleys and woodlands of the volcano, to seek the blessing of the rain and God's protection against hail to crops.

June 3rd day at 6:37 a.m. the volcano released a plume of ash that reached 3 km, so the authorities asked the population to stay away, at the foot of the volcano, creating a safety radius of 12 kms

Now the question is, will come true legend of the volcano is angry with the abuse to nature?

What if this great volcano explodes?

Nearby towns remain on constant alert.

It would be a tremendous catastrophe, but the people who are close to the volcano, either legally or illegible, rejects the possibility of a relocation
